ABOUT PORTUGALBIKE:

Since 1995 we have been organizing Guided Bicycle Tours in Portugal under the name of BTTour. We have already organized more than 200 Bicycle Tours and more than 8000 people have ridden with us.
In 2003 we decided to offer something else – to show our beautiful country to those who live beyond our borders. We created PortugalBike to share with people all over the world some of the most unique biking experiences.
In 2006 we were Finalists in the PUBLITURIS Travel Trade & Hotel Guide 2005 Awards for the «Best Company of Active and Animation Tourism in Portugal» .

Being a Portuguese-owned Company, we know our country better than anybody else and we want to expose people to places and curiosities about Portugal that only a Portuguese knows! Our target is that you visit Portugal …riding a bicycle! On PortugalBike Tours you have the opportunity to visit our historical, cultural and landscape heritage in our Natural Parks, enjoy the sun and the beaches, and at the end of the day you can recover your strength with an exquisite dinner. You can taste our famous wines, amazing cheeses and lovely desserts, and sample typical dishes of each region of Portugal.

You will rest in cozy and charming accommodations. We always choose 4-star quality hotels whenever possible in each region or Tourism in the Country. Our accommodations are always the best offer of each region.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT ON A PORTUGALBIKE TOUR?

PortugalBike Tours are designed so that we begin at a certain point and we end elsewhere. You do not start and end at the same place. We think that is the best way to discover Portugal ...riding a bicycle! Read the specific information about each ride to learn more details.

PortugalBike Tours can be Guided (with a Guide) or Self-Guided (with a GPS device with all tracks recorded). The big difference between the prices for Guided and Self-Guided Tours is that the Self-Guided Tours do not include dinners, picnics, energy bars and water during the day. There is always a backup car to provide any assistance you may need. If you want to take a Self-Guided Tour with dinners included, this can be arranged.

PortugalBike Tours have a maximum of 16 participants, and a minimum of two. Larger groups are also possible upon request and according to our availability. Our Bike Tours are prepared for one week (7 days / Saturday to Friday).

The dates of PortugalBike Tours are according to our calendar, or on request, according to our availability and with a small extra fee. The prices below are for the scheduled PortugalBike Tours. However, if you wish a different date, ask us for prices and availability.

WHAT KIND OF TOURS DO WE OFFER?

There are three types of PortugalBike Tours:

1) Road Bike Tours are on asphalt roads (100%). We always try to avoid roads with a lot of traffic, preferring secondary roads. On these tours, you ride more km/day than on a Trekking Bike Tour. These tours can be Guided or Self-Guided (with a GPS device on the handlebar), so that you are completely free to ride at your own pace, but there is always a backup car to give you any assistance you may need. You use a Road Bike (700x23 wheels with carbon frame). Participants are usually 25-65 years old.

2) Hybrid Bike Tours are mainly on asphalt/tarmac (more than 50%) with some off-road rolling trails. Usually the tours are a little bit longer than the Mountain Bike version tours. It is the best and most relaxing way to know a country by bicycle while also having fun. These tours can be Guided or Self-Guided. You use a Hybrid Bike (700x38 wheels with a little front suspension). Participants are usually 45-65 years old.

3) Mountain Bike Tours are mainly on off-road rough trails (more than 50%), sometimes technical, with very little asphalt/tarmac. You need some biking skills and you need to be in good shape. Usually, these tours are a little bit shorter than the Hybrid Bike tours. It is the best way to know a country and feel the challenge of nature. These tours are always Guided (ask us for self-guided); you will only have to follow your guide through wonderful single-tracks in nature. You use a Mountain Bike (26x2.1 wheels with front suspension and hydraulic disc brakes). Participants are usually 25-45 years old.

Our target is that people visit Portugal …riding a Bicycle!

DIFFICULTY LEVELS:

Each PortugalBike Tour is classified according to its difficulty level, from 1 to 5. Level 1 is the easiest and level 5 is the most difficult.

- Levels 1 and 2 are for Beginners (You are not in good shape)
- Level 3 is for Intermediate Bikers (You must be in good shape)
- Level 4 is for Advanced Bikers (You are fit and in good shape)
- Level 5 is for Expert Bikers (You are in very good shape! You are a winner!)

Besides the classification for overall difficulty level of each PortugalBike Tour, each day is also classified from 1 to 5. When the trails are difficult, we ride less km/day and when the trails are easy, we ride more km/day. Please note that the purpose of PortugalBike Tours is not to train, but only to enjoy your bicycle, nature and environment.

SUMMARY
Very close from Lisbon, Sintra-Cascais Natural Park is one of the most beautiful Natural Parks in Portugal, with its gorgeous maritime coast and the majestic and romantic Sintra Hills. This Tour takes place in a rustic region that was selected as a holiday spot and many rich people has built their holiday houses there. The tour starts in the small fishing town of Ericeira, full of charm and friendly people. You’ll also visit Cape Roca, the westernmost point in continental Europe - where the land ends and the sea begins - where there still reigns the spirit of faith and adventure which took the Portuguese caravels in search of new worlds. But the highlight of this PortugalBike Tour is the visit to the great and majestic Sintra Hills – classified as World Heritage by UNESCO – once the residence of many kings and queens, earls and barons and the Portuguese bourgeoisie. This is a place surrounded by big and high trees that give us an exclusive mystique and romantic atmosphere, where you can breathe pure fresh and humid air. There are many palaces in Sintra (Palacio Nacional de Sintra, Palacio Nacional da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros, Palacio e Quinta de Monserrate, Palácio de Seteais, etc.) and the lush forest hides the most beautiful natural spots. All of this presents a very romantic and mystical environment; an enchanting and majestic place where no one can remain indifferent to the charm of the hills. The tour continues with a ride along the Cascais and Estoril coast to Lisbon. On the right you can admire the beautiful blue ocean and the estuary of Tagus river and on the left you can admire some amazing mansions built in front of the sea. The tour ends in a noble place of Lisbon, a place where you can find many monuments that represent our Discovery Journeys in the 15th and 16th centuries.

TESTIMONIALS
»»»»We would like to add our appreciation to that of others regarding PortugalBike. Jose arranged a self-guided tour for us in Mid-November 2007, and we couldn't have been more pleased by every aspect of our trip. The hotels and their locations were first rate (with sensational breakfasts included), the routes had been well selected, and the support from Jose and Cristina was wonderful! At one point we had to use the cell phone Jose provided to contact them if necessary, and when we told Cristina we had a question for Jose she replied that we should ask him ourselves, as he was just them pulling up to where we were. We looked, and there he was with his van and ever present smile. In short, the support we received even on our own was fantastic, including Jose taking us to the airport to make a six am flight. We simply could not have been happier with any aspect of our experience with PortugalBike, and certainly now regard Jose as not just a wonderful host but also a friend. And by the way, the Portuguese people were invariably friendly, kind, and helpful. In contrast to what we have found in other countries these days, they really seem to like Americans!

»»»» About PortugalBike I would like to stress the good quality of the bikes and the use of GPS (it gives us tranquillity and independence in a self-guided tour). Let me also point out the quantity of information that was supplied and the splendid hotels that were booked. This was our first experience in this kind of tours and, thanks to the good work that was performed by PortugalBike, we intend to repeat the experience.

»»»» It was just AMAZING!! We liked the Tour very much. We had a fantastic week of holidays, with amazing views, and we are already missing the Sun of Portugal. The meals were very good and everything was very well organised. Thank you again and we will be back next year.

2. THE WILD ISLET AND THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE
(Guided or Self-Guided Tour)

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
1. Multi-coloured fields with various crops
2. Peniche and Baleal Peninsulas
3. The sea, the wind and the rocks
4. The Islet of Berlenga - Natural Reserve
5. Obidos - the beautiful medieval village
6. Obidos castle and its high medieval walls
7. Small houses and narrow streets decorated with flowers
8. “Ginginha” – the delicious cherry liquor
9. The tasty fresh fish of the Atlantic Coast
10. Nazare - the most typical beach in Portugal

SUMMARY
The Royal Ice Factory is a small construction dating back to the 18th century, which is considered by the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage as a “unique example in the world due to the originality of its structures and its reasonably preserved condition”. And this is the place, at the top of Montejunto Hills – which is a Protected Area – where this PortugalBike Tour begins. Another interesting point of this tour is the Peniche Peninsula, a place of fishing traditions and from where you can admire one of the largest fishing and diving sanctuaries – the Wild Islet of Berlenga, also known as Berlenga Natural Reserve. This is a wonderful place where you will go by boat, leaving our bicycles on the other side, and take a swim in the clear waters on the coast of this islet, near S. Joao Batista fortress. This very ancient and small fortress defended our coast from the pirate’s attacks that came from the sea, between the 16th century and the 19th century. Another highlight of this tour is the Medieval Village of Obidos. Originally a Roman village, it was taken from the Moors in 1148. Its castle is classified as a national monument and it is a perfect example of a medieval fortress. This is a “village-museum”, perfectly preserved and walled by its high walls which perpetuate its medieval character. The next day, you will ride along the beautiful Atlantic coast towards Nazare, the most typical beach in Portugal. This is a place full of old traditions and today we can still see fishermen drying fish under the sun as they did in the past. This is also a wonderful place to refresh ourselves in the blue waters or take a walk along the golden sand.

»»»» My wife, my son and I went on a Hybrid Bike tour with PortugalBike and had a great time. The service was first class all the way from making the reservation to the conclusion of the ride. The ride was fantastic and Jose who was our guide was fun to be with and rode at the appropriate pace for everyone involved. He was a wealth of knowledge about the country and the specific area that we were riding. Even the van ride to and from the ride was enjoyable with great conversation and information about the area. The lunch provided was delicious and far better than I imagined. The people of Portugal are very friendly and the country is beautiful and well suited to mountain or road biking. If you haven't considered Portugal for a biking destination, please do. I highly recommend PortugalBike for any biking tours in Portugal. Again, thank you very much for the wonderful time.

»»»» Thank you for the best vacation ever. I can honestly say it was custom made for me!! (...) «The Wild Islet & the Medieval Village» tour have shown me that Portugal is a diverse country. I feel like I saw it all in 8 days, without any travel stress. (...) PortugalBike is a complete destination management company. I am so impressed with your company and I am telling everyone; you were «tour guides», personal trainers, translators, concierge, taxi, caterers, historians, friends and professional business operators. PortugalBike takes care of everything, all you need to do is ride and enjoy!! Great home made lunches, excellent local restaurants, transportation and translation services you will be thrilled with your vacation. The time I spent off the bicycle was as interesting and diverse as during the ride. PortugalBike is priceless and you (Jose & Cristina) are a pleasure. Spending a week with 2 total strangers and trusting their judgement was a concern of mine before selecting my trip. I recommend you both on your character and integrity; you are both excellent people (personally and as business owners). I HIGHLY recommend this trip to everyone and anyone who has a pulse and a desire to see a beautiful country. By bike, boat, foot, land, sea and van, we covered the city of Lisboa from top to bottom, ocean coast, cliffs, beach, islands, mountains 600m up, caves 60m under, castles, desert, farms, countryside villages, vacation hot spots, nature preserves and island, fancy hotels, manor houses, converted olive factories, ostrich farms, sheep herds and my favourite - Obidos, the city inside the castle walls, it's amazing. Thank you again for everything!

3. THE MEGALITHIC HERITAGE IN ALENTEJO
(Guided Tour)

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
1. Cork trees and Olive trees
2. Dolmens and Menhirs more than 10.000 years old
3. Vineyards - guided visit and wine tasting
4. Almendres Cromlech and Xurez Cromlech
5. The white Medieval Village of Monsaraz on the top

7. Evora - a World Heritage town classified by UNESCO
8. Vast fields with wild flowers and herds
9. Beautiful, white marble quarries
10. The Highest Anta in the Iberian Peninsula (pre-historic monument)

SUMMARY
Alentejo is a scarcely populated region with open horizons, where the rhythm of life follows the idle sound of regional songs. It is perfect for riding a bicycle and experiencing an unforgettable adventure. This is a land of unimaginable heritage. The tour will take you along the remarkable traces of ancient cultures: dolmens and cromlechs, Roman and Arab vestiges mingling with the most recent signs of Christianity of which the numerous medieval castles are but one example. You will ride alongside vast wheat-fields and vineyards where intense green and golden colours are the main characteristic of the plains in Alentejo. One of the most typical sights in this region is a vast field with some cork trees here and there and the herds (sometimes sheep, sometimes pigs or cows) usually enjoying the shade of the trees. The villages with their whitewashed one-floor houses are a picturesque landscape in Alentejo. You will have the opportunity to visit Evora, which is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, and some other beautiful villages, such as Estremoz, Vila Vicosa and Monsaraz. The people here are very proud of their heritage and they preserve the ancient buildings and also the ancient practices. This is a region that has a very rich handicraft tradition – pottery, embroideries, hand-painted furniture, wrought-iron works, etc. The local gastronomy is varied and quite tasty and perfectly matches the famous local wines. This is a tour where the quietness and silence of the endless landscapes invite us to share nature in a rural environment and socialize with the people that live and work there. This is a spectacular tour characterized by moderate physical and technical difficulty and it takes us to the most ancient vestiges of our history and heritage.

»»»»The Megalithic Heritage in Alentejo tour was an excellent adventure for a family of 4 (including 2 teenage boys). We truly wished that we could have extended our journey. The hybrid cycling exceeded our expectations… great landscape, quiet roads and paths, charming villages, peaceful vinyards… all which allowed us to explore remote areas of Portugal that would normally be inaccessible. The accommodation, meals, and travel route were superb. Combining this with the hospitality and personal touch of our guide and host from Portugal Bike Tours, I’d strongly recommend this tour for anybody interested in cycling within Portugal.

»»»» Regarding our tour, we spent a marvellous week in Portugal and were happy to discover the nice countryside of the Alentejo. This week out in the wonderful nature, discovering lots of nice trails and some cultural sites made us really forget everyday's life. It was fantastic and we enjoyed very much the perfect organisation and your company, while riding the bikes, around the pick-nick-table or during one of the nice dinners together with you. PortugalBike is a great team that we can warmly recommend to all our friends. We hope to see you again, perhaps on another tour.
= Max and Franziska Beckmann (Germany), 2006 =
»»»» Although the Tour was not difficult, we feel like a personal victory to get to the end. We loved the ride and the beautiful sceneries. We also liked the picnics a lot; it's great to eat admiring the landscape and listening to the birds and feeling the presence of animals. Everything was very well organised and we really appreciated how you quickly adapted the programme to our riding capacities.

This SW landscape is 300 million years old and it is one of the most preserved landscapes all over Europe; human intervention has been less visible throughout its history. Once submerged (about 2 million years ago), this is a vast area with many different coastal habitats and countless beaches and cliffs. Our daily tours include going to the wonderful beaches of this Natural Park and taking a swim in the clear, blue sea. Cliffs are steep, almost 100m high and right above the ocean. Countless rocks and isolated islets complete this beautiful and unique scenery. You will see the islet of Pessegueiro, a short distance out to sea, which has archaeological findings that date back to the Iron Age and Roman times. This area boasts a diversity of rare botanical species, with very interesting flora and a variety of maritime birds that nest here. Riding along the trails of these cliffs that belong to this Natural Park, admiring the unique views of the blue ocean and feel the fresh wind in your face is one of the most fantastic feelings that any person can have. In the extreme south point of this tour you will find S. Vicente Cape. This is the southwestern-most point in continental Europe and a passing area for thousands of birds of prey. The tour also goes to Sagres, which is the place from where our brave forefathers sailed on their caravels seeking new peoples and continents. Finally, you will visit some of the beaches of our famous Algarve including the cosmopolitan city of Lagos. This is one of the oldest towns in Algarve. We can still see evidence of the wall surrounding the town for protection. Lagos also has an old fort and its former Slave Market is now an art gallery.

TESTIMONIALS
»»»»We have recently returned from a memorable bicycle tour of the Alentejo arranged by PortugalBike Tours. The west coast of Portugal is extraordinarily beautiful and unspoiled. PortugalBike Tours knows the area intimately and gave huge advantages over "outside tours". Owner and guide Jose and his charming wife Christina are the ultimate hosts. They know the best local inns, restaurants, picnic spots, secluded beaches and scenic views. Their stated goal is to give the best possible holiday and they "deliver" to the highest standard.
= Rebecca & Donald Munnings, Ages: 58 (Mississauga, Ontario – Canada), 2008 =
»»»»Just have to thank you both for setting up the bike trip of a lifetime. The equipment was excellent, the route & GPS took us to places we could NEVER have found ourselves and of course Jose was like an angel, gently guiding and always there to catch us when we fell. We will highly reccommend your company to anyone interested in discovering the heart of Portugal.
= Mary Pat, Age: 54 (Toronto, Ontario – Canada), 2008 =

»»»»I fall asleep at night thinking about some of the beautiful places I saw during my tour along the Alentejo coast. You need to be surprised in life. For me, that's one of the greatest things about travelling. During my Portugal holiday I was constantly surprised by the sights, smells and tastes of your country. It enriched my soul.
= Brien Christie, Age 58 (Toronto, Ontario – Canada), 2008 =

»»»» (…) The tour not only MET my wishes and expectations, it far EXCEEDED them. I loved every bit of it (even having to walk on 2 of the steepest hills), and would do it again "in a heartbeat" as we say here in the USA. (…)The fact that we were hardly ever on a busy road in Portugal increased our enjoyment of the scenery tenfold! (…) Beyond that, I want to add how much I appreciated "the little things" that were actually quite big... like picnic tables in beautiful spots, delicious cheeses, bread, and other treats, luggage waiting for us in the lobby of our hotel, and some of the best dinners I've ever had on a vacation.
= Martha C. Scala (California – U.S.A.), 2007 =
»»»» (…) It was not only beautiful scenery and great biking, but a fantastic culinary experience as well! PortugalBike is a family run company, and Jose and Cristina were great hosts and guides.
= Maria Pacella (Canada), 2007 =
»»»» (...) We consider ourselves very fortunate to have had Jose as our guide. Not only does he operate an exemplary business but he is a well informed person who willingly shares Portugal's history and culture and he truly cares about the people on his tour. He provides excellent service to his customers. (...) We were so pleased that our tour travelled along the west coast as we saw breathtaking scenery. The cliff colours due to soil variations and the ocean colours and sounds were unbelievable. We were fortunate to bike not only along the coast but across pastoral areas that were green, relaxing, and totally enjoyable. We view ancient fortresses and castles, farmyards, olive groves, and cork trees (...)

SUMMARY
This Tour takes place in the Natural Park of Serra da Estrela. Due to its demographic isolation, this region is today the most distinct region of Portugal. Here we find a part of an ancient Portugal with its unspoiled and immensely varied scenery and traditional cuisine.
Here is the highest place in Continental Portugal (± 2000m) and your accommodation place is very close to that point. Every day you will ride down the mountain heading to a different direction and discovering different aspects of this amazing landscape.
You will ride along the Glacier Valley of Zezere River with its dense vegetation and you will have the opportunity of swimming in the refreshing limpid waters of the rivers.
This Tour is also full of History and you will visit some charming small towns and villages that still maintain their ancient characteristics, the castles, the narrow roads, the small houses. You will visit Belmonte and see the castle, the cobblestone roads and the synagogue. Here there is a very ancient Jewish community (there are records dated from 1297) that was maintained in secrecy over the centuries thus surviving in spite of the persecutions that this people suffered all over Europe. You will visit Linhares, its castle and the narrow cobblestone roads. You will visit the very well-preserved historic village of Sortelha and the unique schist village of Piodao with its small black houses built on the slope. A walk through these historic villages is like entering a live museum where the simplest traditions survive in the hands of their people, in their music, in their handicraft or, simply, in their natural way of saying Hello to those who pass by …

TESTIMONIALS
»»»» I would have to say that it was one of the best holidays we have had as a family. The trips on the internet were described in detail hence there were no surprises about the trips. PortugalBike is a well run company. Whether your trip is guided or not you are provided with interesting and important information about the treks. Our guide was friendly, polite and well informed about each area we visited. Most important, because we took the self-guided tour, we felt if we had any mechanical difficulties help was close by. PortugalBike thinks of everything you need for a healthy active sport holiday. After our first experience with PortugalBike, we are already planning our next trip. We were extremely pleased with the professionalism and the selection of treks available. PortugalBike was also flexible to meet the needs of our family. The accommodations were super! What a wonderful way to experience the beauty and history of Portugal; it is full of surprises! Thanks for the wonderful trip in Portugal. We enjoyed it very much and was a great experience for all of us!

Portugal Bike Hybrid Bike Vacations in Portugal: The Wild Islet and the Medieval Village

Age range, type of group

PortugalBike Hybrid Bike Tours are designed for couples and singles. Participants are usually 45-65 years old.

The spirit of our tours is not competition and this is not training. The purpose of PortugalBike Tours is to have fun and enjoy Nature and the wild and still intact environment, to get to know different people and to spend unforgettable holidays in a sunny, warm and welcoming country without stress!

Usually, in a PortugalBike activity when you have many kilometres to ride, their difficulty is low; when the terrain is difficult, you ride less kilometres each day. Moreover, tours are designed so that a very difficult day is not followed by another very difficult day. In the middle of the week there is usually a day when you do not ride; this is good so that your body may rest without the bicycle and you can enjoy other activities (shopping, sightseeing, going to the beach, etc.).
We always have a long sunny day to ride our bicycles without stress and at our own pace; we are not competing or training. Our purpose is to make you enjoy our country while riding a bicycle.

We always look for beautiful and comfortable places, showing some of our traditional architecture and heritage where you can rest and enjoy the landscape. Many of these places have a swimming pool, where you can relax at the end of the day. Breakfast is included in the rate.
